Town of Kearny

Located on Arizona Highway 177 in the region known as the “Copper Basin,” nestled between the Tortilla and Dripping Springs Mountains, and adjacent to the Gila River, Kearny, AZ is a diverse and welcoming community beloved by those who crave a small-town lifestyle.

The Town of Kearny was founded in the 1950s as the Ray Mine expansion consumed the towns of Sonora, Barcelona, and Ray. Prior to the development of the Town of Kearny, regional ethnic groups lived in largely segregated communities, with Mexican mining migrants living in Sonora, Spanish migrants living in Barcelona, and Anglo migrants living in Ray.

As the mine consumed the towns surrounding it and Kearny was developed, ethnic groups came together as neighbors, each bringing their own traditions with them. Kearny became the melting pot of the West and one of the first planned integrated communities in the United States. While many families have come and gone, the traditions remain, giving Kearny a unique and celebrated character, exemplifying our national motto E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one).

Today the Town of Kearny boasts:

  • A full-service Town Government
  • Recreational Lake and Campground
  • OHV Trail Park
  • County Library
  • Public Park
  • Golf Course
  • Summer Swimming Pool
  • Baseball Park
  • Airport

If you’re visiting Kearny, expect to find a community that loves their little town and welcomes visitors and new residents with open arms and a hearty handshake.
